Yaphank Car Accident Leads to Death of Elderly Man

A Yaphank car accident involving two vehicles leaves an elderly man dead after the cars collide outside a local sports complex. The incident took place at approximately 3:45 PM on Sunday afternoon, March 7, 2010, on Sills Road.

According to Suffolk County police, a Honda, driven by Francesco DiMaria, 77, of Mastic, pulled out of the Baseball Heaven Sport Complex on Sills Road in Yaphank where he was struck by a southbound Toyota. The driver of the Toyota has been identified as Karli McDougall, 17, of Middle Island.

Rescue crews transported DiMaria to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead a short time later due to injuries sustained in the wreck.

McDougall, along with three other passengers riding in her car, were also taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center and treated for injuries. Details concerning their injuries were not made available; however, the injuries have been described as non-life threatening.

The cause of the accident has not been determined and the fatal Yaphank car accident is still under investigation by Fifth Squad detectives. Anyone who has information pertaining to the accident has been asked to contact police at (631) 854-8552.

This is an unfortunate accident and our thoughts and condolences go out to Mr. DiMaria's family and friends. We would also like to wish the rest of the victims a speedy recovery.
