Woman Killed and Eight Injured in New York Bus Accident

A woman from New York City was killed and eight other people injured on Sunday, July 5, 2009, when the bus taking them upstate to visit prisons crashed near Lake George.

The bus was carrying nine passengers and the driver at the time of the accident, which took place at 3:15 AM near Exit 21 on a portion of Interstate 87, known as the Adirondack Northway Highway, according to New York State Police and a fire chief.  Curtrice E. Gravitt, a 33-year-old woman, was killed when the bust flipped onto its side and trapped her underneath.

Gravitt sustained severe head, neck and chest injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene, said New York State Police.  She had been seated near the back, but authorities are still unsure how she got trapped underneath the bus.

Seven passengers were transported to Glens Falls Hospital.  According to Ray Agnew, a hospital spokesman, two of the injured passengers had surgery and a third passenger was listed in serious condition in the intensive-care unit.  Police said that by Sunday afternoon, four of the passengers had already been released from the hospital.  The bus driver was also treated for minor injuries.

Police said that the New York bus accident is still being investigated and no charges were made by Sunday night.
