Woman Dies in New Jersey Turnpike Accident

Posted on Dec 07, 2009

An early morning accident on the New Jersey Turnpike ends in the death of a Hamilton woman. The New Jersey Turnpike accident took place at approximately 6:15 AM on Tuesday morning, December 1, 2009.

According to state police, Ellen J. Liedtka, 67, of Hamilton, died when her car, which was traveling southbound, was pushed into a concrete median divider along the New Jersey Turnpike. Her 2001 Mercury Sable was rear-ended and pushed into the center lane by a 2009 Subaru driven by Bernard Pittinsky, 78, of Baldwin, New York. Liedtka’s Sable was then struck by a 2007 Freightliner tractor trailer. The force of the second impact caused her car to hit the concrete median divider and burst into flames.

According to the Burlington County Medical Examiner’s office, Liedtka was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neither Pittinsky nor the driver of the tractor trailer, Jhoner A. Javier, 43, of Providence, Rhode Island, were injured in the three-vehicle wreck.

It is unclear as to why Liedtka either slowed down or stopped her Sable in the southbound left lane of traffic.

The three-vehicle accident is still under investigation by Trooper Paul Boston of the Moorestown Station on the turnpike, the New Jersey State Fatal Accident Investigation Unit and the Crime Scene Investigation Unit.
