U.S. Home to High Rates of Bipolar Disorder

Posted on Mar 21, 2011

March 17, 2011 - Bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression, is a mental health disorder often defined by significant mood shifts ranging from a deep depression to a euphoric state of mania. Recent studies looked at 11 different countries and found that 4.4% of Americans suffer from bipolar disorder, more than any other country included in the survey.

Due to significant cultural differences between the countries, researchers could not draw definite conclusions about why bipolar disorder seems to affect Americans more than people in other countries. Part of the number could be due to the way the disorder is diagnosed in America along with stigmas about mental health conditions that may stop people from seeking treatment in other countries.

The study also found that nearly three-quarters of those diagnosed with depression and half of those with mania admitted that their symptoms caused disruptions in both their work life and relationships.

Bipolar disorder is a serious mental health condition that has been linked to substance abuse as well as suicidal behavior and anxiety disorders. Severe cases of bipolar disorder, like other mental health conditions, may qualify sufferers for Social Security disability benefits when such conditions interfere with a person's ability to work and function.

Talking to a New York disability lawyer can help you get a better idea if your bipolar condition or similar mental health disorder may qualify you to receive disability benefits.
