Upright MRI Provides Breakthrough in Understanding Multiple Sclerosis

According to a report from Disabled World, an upright MRI, known as the FONAR Upright Multi-Position MRI, may provide a breakthrough in understanding the cause of multiple sclerosis (MS). MS can become disabling and qualify an individual for Social Security disability benefits.

Medical researchers of this new MRI have released findings which indicate that the cause of MS may be biochemical. They believe it's related to earlier trauma to the individual's neck, which can then result in obstruction of the cerebrospinal fluid's flow. 

This obstruction can then lead to the fluid being stored in the ventricles of the brain, causing a buildup of pressure. This then causes leakage of the fluid into the brain's tissue. It's believed this leakage is the reason brain lesions are found in those with MS.

The FONAR upright MRI are able to detect the flow of the cerebrospinal fluid in and out of the brain, whether the patient is lying down or is in an upright position. However, their study indicates that the obstruction was more pronounced when the patient was in an upright position.

With these findings, new therapeutic approaches may be made with regard to treatment.
