Unemployed Also Turning to Disability Benefits For Support

Posted on Dec 10, 2010

December 10, 2010 - Recently released numbers from the Social Security Administration show that the 2010 fiscal year saw a 3.2 million total for applications filed for disability benefits. This is a serious increase from 2.6 million seen in 2008, which many believe to be the peak of the recession.

CNNMoney.com
reports that while the number of applications has increased, according to the SSA the number of approved applications has remained fairly stable, only increasing 2% to 37% for 2010.

The reason for the increase in applications isn't because more Americans became disabled because of the economy. Rather, many believe that because unemployment pay only goes so far, many are trying any resource available to make ends meet. That includes seeking Social Security disability for conditions that may not qualify or be severe enough to be considered disabling.

Layoffs have resulted in many partially disabled workers to be laid off from positions that accommodated their disabilities. Now, having to start fresh in a job market with many other workers who don't have easily accommodated disabilities such as arthritis, these job seekers are being turned away from positions that would normally be available in a stable economy.

With more claims being added to the queue that requires more review, it only adds to the waiting time that seriously disabled claimants have to face. The best remedy is still to make sure you file a complete and accurate application and keep diligent on your correspondence with the SSA. A New York disability lawyer can help you with your filing, tracking, and follow-up on your application, as well as any necessary appeals.
