Transfer of Heart Attack Victims to Heart Hospital Often Delayed

In a report from the New York Times, researchers at Duke University found that the transfer time of heart attack victims from general hospitals to heart hospitals is often delayed. A heart attack could result in permanent disability, or even death, which may enable you to file for Social Security disability benefits. Current medical guidelines indicate that patients who are treated at a hospital and require further care from another hospital that specializes in heart treatment should be transferred within 30 minutes. 

Yet researchers from Duke University found that 56% of patients were not transferred until at least an hour later and 35% were not transferred until at least an hour and a half later.

The increased rate of death for patients who are not transferred within 30 minutes was almost 6%, in comparison to 2.7% fatalities for those who were transferred in less than 30 minutes. Waiting too long for a hospital transfer can result in the critical loss of time.
