Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Inc., Steps Down Amid Talk of Cancer

Health Day reports that as Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Inc. steps down, there is talk about the battle he is facing with a serious, rare form of pancreatic cancer. When you are facing a serious illness that will result in disability for at least a year, then you could be entitled to receive Social Security disability benefits.

In 2004, Jobs was diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer and underwent a liver transplant. Since then there has only been speculation about the effect the cancer has had on his ability to continue working. When he resigned, he didn't provide specific reasons why.

However, neuroendocrine cancer is a very serious but rare condition that only affects a few thousand individuals every year. The tumors don't always start in the pancreas; they can form in other areas of the body as well.

Doctors indicate that the prognosis for pancreatic cancer is much worse; however neuroendocrine cancer can be just as bad. Oftentimes it will return after undergoing treatment and those who have recurrences of this cancer are more likely to die from the disease.
