Staten Island Teen Killed in Drag-Race Accident

Posted on May 20, 2009

A 17-year-old girl was killed following a New York drag-race accident on July 23, 2007 on Veterans Road West near the Bricktown Centre in Charleston.  Michelle Arout sustained fatal injuries after she was ejected from the back seat of a car.

The drivers of the two vehicles, 18-year-old Joseph Donovan, and 19-year-old Anthony Reis, admitted their guilt and cut plea deals to second-degree manslaughter.  Arout’s father, John Arount, said, “It’s the first time since the accident that the boys have admitted their guilt and taken responsibility.  They’ve stepped up to the plate to a certain degree.”

The teenagers could spend up to one to three years in jail after pleading guilty to the charge, however there is a chance that they would just receive probation.  They could also lose their driver’s licenses for up to five years.

The fatal accident occurred when a speeding car hit a 1994 Ford Mustang driven by Reis.  It then crashed into a steel stanchion that was guarding a fire hydrant and split in two.  According to prosecutors, Donovan was driving 90 MPH and Reis was traveling at 79.5 MPH when the two cars collided and swerved off the road.

A spokesman from the District Attorney’s office said that prosecutors cut the plea deal in light of the circumstances, ages of the defendants and the lack of a previous arrest record.
