Staten Island Construction Accident Claims Man’s Life

A man was killed by a piece of machinery in a Staten Island construction accident.  The fatal accident occurred in an Elm Park construction yard.

The industrial accident took place at approximately 5:30 PM in Perfetto Enterprises.  The man was not identified, but was described as being in his 50s.  He was crushed by a backhoe and taken to Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton where he was later pronounced dead.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is investigating the construction accident.  The New York Police Department had initially responded to the accident.

Claudio Perfetto, a 54-year-old Dongan Hills resident and owner of the business, would not comment to reporters following the accident.

The construction yard is operated by the same family who owns Brooklyn-based Perfetto Contracting Co.  In July, the company had an asphalt excavator machine fall over during a milling project on Cunard Place and Ridgefield Avenue in Concord.  The machine spilled 30 gallons of diesel fuel and some hydraulic fluid on the road and into the nearby sewers.  Two workers were injured in that accident.
