December 28, 2010 - Syracuse, NY - A partnership between Syracuse University's Burton Blatt Institute (BBI) and Onondaga County is helping many individuals with disabilities realize their dream of starting their own business.
NewsWise's feature on the Start-Up NY program found that it has been running since 2007 and to date has provided more than 200 New Yorkers with the knowledge and resources to start almost 50 new businesses. The Inclusive EntrepreneurshipTM initiative developed by the university works with partners such as Onondaga County to help gain access to financial resources and business development assets.
Students at BBI work with disabled entrepreneurs and business development consultants in new college courses designed to help both student and entrepreneur. The program has been showing positive growth for disabled independence, the local economy, and community partnerships.
Based on the success of Start-Up NY in Syracuse, the program is currently working to replicate it in Manhattan and has spurred similar initiatives in other parts of the state, as well as internationally.
Recipients of Social Security disability benefits are allowed to attempt to return to employment without risk of losing benefits during a trial work period. Starting a business may be considered as part of a trial work period, so you should consult with a New York disability lawyer before making any employment moves. Your lawyer will be able to explain the impact such an undertaking may have on your benefits.
