SSA Attempts Video Hearings to Help Reduce Claim Backlog

January 21, 2011 - Attending a claim hearing for Social Security disability benefits applications in person is difficult for many severely disabled claimants. In many cases, traveling to and from their home is a stressful, sometimes impossible, feat.

The Forbes Bernie's Brigade blog reports video hearings are just one of many recent technological steps the Social Security Administration (SSA) is using to help reduce the claims backlog. Video hearings will facilitate remote hearings, letting disabled claimants remain in the comfort of their homes.

This new method of conducting hearings not only helps those claimants who are too disabled to leave their home, but also allows for faster hearings and helps claimants who live in remote areas minimize travel. The SSA hopes these new enhancements to the hearing process will not only help expedite benefit approvals for those who are in desperate need, but also bring some relief to a stressed system and reduce the claims backlog.
