Social Security Disability: Understanding the Risk Factors for Glaucoma

Vision loss could lead an individual to apply for Social Security disability benefits. When a severe medical condition prevents you from working, you may be entitled to disability benefits.

In a report from Health Day, researchers have discovered a number of risk factors that could cause glaucoma. They may also indicate how far this eye disease will progress.

According to the U.S. National Eye Institute, glaucoma is most times caused by fluid pressure inside the eye. The pressure causes damage to the optic nerve, which is responsible for sending signals from the nerve fibers in the eye to the brain.

One of the first signs of glaucoma is usually a loss of peripheral vision but unfortunately, in many cases it is too late to do anything about the loss of eyesight. Therefore, an understanding of risk factors could be beneficial.

A study of 587 patients revealed the following risk factors for glaucoma: 

• loss of vision field;
• thinning of cornea; and
• IOP of 18 mmHg (millimeters of mercury) or higher.  

The IOP finding is significant and can be used to help diagnose patients, along with deciding on how to treat the condition. This could potentially help slow the progression of glaucoma.
