According to a report from the Doctor's Lounge, new research indicates there is a significant increase in the risk of surgical complications for those patients who are obese. Obesity can lead to severe medical complications that may result in permanent disability. This could qualify an individual to receive Social Security disability benefits.
It was found that obese patients undergoing elective surgery were 12 times more likely to suffer from complications; this was in comparison to those patients at a normal weight. Examples of complications include surgical site infection, inflammation, and slower healing periods.
Considering these findings, researchers, from Johns Hopkins, believe that insurance companies should reevaluate the way doctors and hospitals are penalized for higher rates of complication.
Additionally, researchers believe that reimbursement should also be evaluated depending on how complicated the procedure was. Average procedures can become more difficult and time-consuming when they are performed on patients who are obese.
Researchers would like to look further into the role that obesity plays when it comes to surgeries so that new standards could potentially be developed.
If you have been diagnosed with a severe condition and would like to know if you qualify for disability benefits, you should seek legal counsel. A New York Social Security lawyer can help.
