Researchers Unlock Mystery to Early-Onset Alzheimer’s Disease

June 22, 2010 - Early-onset Alzheimer's Disease is a serious condition affecting an estimated 200,000 Americans. This constitutes about 5-10% of the total number of Alzheimer's Disease patients in the United States.

Early-onset Alzheimer's Disease, which affects those who are 65 years or younger, can lead to serious disability and is included on the Social Security Administration's list for Compassionate Allowances. This means that those who suffer from this condition are eligible for fast-tracked Social Security disability benefits.  

According to WebMD.com, researchers have identified how mutations in the gene linked to early-onset Alzheimer's Disease actually cause the disease. The researchers found that while this gene typically acts as a clean-up system for brain "debris," a mutation in the gene prevents it from performing this critical function.

Scientists say that this important discovery will hopefully lead to better treatment of early-onset Alzheimer's Disease, as well as the more common form of the brain disorder. It is estimated that there is a total of 4 million Alzheimer's cases in the United States.

According to the Mayo Clinic, those with early-onset Alzheimer's Disease may become unable to continue working and suffer serious financial repercussions. This problem is compounded when the spouse must also stop working in order to act as a full-time caregiver to the ailing spouse. Couple this with the fact that sufferers are not yet able to collect standard Social Security retirement benefits and it's easy to see why early-onset Alzheimer's Disease is such a costly public health concern.
