November 12, 2010 - Parents caring for a disabled adult child may be deeply concerned for their day-to-day care, but studies show most have given little thought to who will take over their child's care when they're no longer able to.
PR Newswire released new reports detailing a study by the Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company that examined the situations of families caring for a disabled adult. The study, conducted by Harris Interactive, shows that more than half of the parents surveyed with disabled adult children believe their children could not take care of themselves. Nearly 3/4ths of the parents did not believe their children could be financially independent.
While the parents may be well equipped to take care of their disabled adult children now, very few have planned for the future. As the parents age, they too will need additional care and assistance, and when they pass away, many disabled adults are unable to care for themselves or get the care they need.
Of the families surveyed, 74% did not have an estate plan and only 6% had a life care plan set up to provide for their disabled children. The study was conducted this year with 1,714 participating adults.
