According to Reuters, packaging for cigarettes will contain graphic images, all in the hopes of preventing non-smokers from starting and those who already do, to stop. Severe medical conditions like cancer that prevent you from working may qualify you to receive Social Security disability benefits.
The graphic images must be included on all tobacco and cigarette packaging by September 2012, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Some of the images will include rotting teeth, cancerous lungs and dead bodies. The hope is that the shock value will raise awareness for the risks involved in starting a habit that can increase the chances for health conditions including heart disease, cancer, stroke and lung disease. There will also be depictions that are meant to show how secondhand smoke can affect children.
According to the American Cancer Society, more than 221,000 individuals in the United States will be diagnosed with lung cancer in 2011. Additionally, about 157,000 individuals are expected to die as a result of lung cancer.
If you have been diagnosed with a severe medical condition that has affected your ability to work and function normally, then you should speak with a Brooklyn Social Security disability attorney about your case.
