NY Governor Proclaims August to be Social Security Month

Posted on Aug 10, 2010

August 3, 2010 - New York - In celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Social Security Program, Governor David A. Patterson declared that August 2010 be known as "Social Security Diamond Anniversary Month" for the state of New York.

On August 14, the Social Security Administration (SSA) celebrates its 75th year, known as the "diamond anniversary." During August there will be a number of events and celebrations to commemorate this important milestone in the program. The New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOA) is in charge of coordinating the events and festivities. The kick-off event was held August 3rd at the Empire State Plaza in Albany.

At this event the Governor released the proclamation, and unveiled a temporary display of the history of the organization. This display will be available for viewing in the North Concourse of the Plaza throughout August. As Governor Patterson issued the proclamation:

"Today we celebrate not only the signing of the landmark legislation that resulted in the Social Security Program, but the achievement of one of our nation's great leaders, President Franklin Roosevelt, a native New Yorker. We know that the work and initiatives that President Roosevelt forged in New York State while Governor set the stage for what was achieved on a national level with the signing of the Social Security Act seventy-five years ago."

Director of the NYSOA, Michael J. Burgess presented the proclamation. He added the following statement:

"We are fortunate that as we stand here today, 75 years after the leadership of great New Yorkers like President Franklin Roosevelt and Secretary of Labor Francis Perkins, brought to fruition the landmark legislation that established the Social Security Program, to bring financial security to those who at one time feared poverty. The Social Security Program continues to provide important benefits to retirees, children, widows and the disabled."

The Social Security programs provide benefits to 9 out of 10 individuals age 65 and older. Among the estimated 160 million workers in the US, 94% are covered under Social Security with 53% having no private pension coverage. In New York alone, more than $3.5 billion is paid out in Social Security benefits each month.
