November 10, 2010 - Utica, NY - The Charles T. Sitrin Health Care Center has been awarded a $36,000 grant to develop a new adaptive sports program for disabled central New Yorkers.
The Rome Observer reports that the new Central New York Adaptive Recreation and Sports Program will provide increased recreational opportunities to 3 local health centers. The grant was furnished by the Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties, Inc. to support the efforts of the Sitrin Health Care Center, Central Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired and Upstate Cerebral Palsy.
The Adaptive Recreation and Sports Program will focus on providing recreational and competitive programs including bowling, tennis, shooting and curling. It will also stress inclusion and involvement in community activities, which will help improve quality of life by promoting teamwork, confidence, independence and physical skills.
Programs such as these have shown to help improve treatment and ongoing care for those living with permanent disabilities. Many doctors have begun to use activities such as adaptive sports as a treatment method for patients with varying types of disabilities.
