New York Commissioner Wants “Alcopops” Banned

August 13, 2011, Staten Island, N.Y. - Alcoholic beverages, such as Joose and Four Loko, can almost always be found in local convenience stores. According to an August 2^nd news story on NY1, these drinks contain almost triple the amount of alcohol content of beer and equal the amount of a full wine bottle.

Some are saying that these drinks are targeted to the wrong audience and are a serious health hazard. Dr. Thomas Farley, New York City's health commissioner, along with many medical professionals, believe that these types of drinks are strategically targeted toward teenagers based on their fruity flavor, eye-catching appearance, and convenient purchasing locations.

Many doctors have reported several medical emergencies where underage drinkers arrived at the hospital intoxicated from these specific alcoholic beverages. Their hearts were racing and they seemed more awake than they should have been, considering they were consuming barbiturates. This lethal combination leads them to drinking more than is safe.

Dr. Farley wants to see these drinks banned from local convenience stores and limit them to only liquor stores. On the other hand, Phusion, the company that manufactures Joose and Four Loko, is saying that they are strict on marketing their products to people who are of legal drinking age, suggesting instead that law enforcement is the problem.
