New Program Helping Disabled New Yorkers with Winter Heating Bills

Posted on Oct 29, 2010

October 18, 2010 - Albany, NY - One of the major problems faced by many disabled New Yorkers on Social Security disability benefits is the cost of heating their homes during the harsh winter months. National Grid, one of New York and upper New England's largest energy providers, has announced a program to help seniors and disabled New Yorkers ensure a warm winter.

A press release from National Grid announced the company's new community outreach efforts is encouraging customers that predict a need for assistance in paying their heating bills to apply early for the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP).

HEAP is a federally funded program that helps low income households with assistance in paying their heating bills. The program opens in November and eligibility is based on your income, fuel source, and the presence of a household member who is either younger than 6-years-old, older than 60-years-old, or permanently disabled.

National Grid has also announced a contribution of $275,000 to the Care and Share Energy Fund which is an Upstate NY fund that also provides heating assistance to qualified individuals regardless of their heating fuel source.

The Care and Share Energy Fund is administered by the American Red Cross and serves elderly New Yorkers age 60 or older or any household member who is disabled and receiving Supplemental Security Income or Social Security Disability benefits.

Programs such as HEAP and the Care and Share Energy Fund are among several private and federal programs designed to help low income, disabled New Yorkers with their daily living needs. If you are disabled and struggling with your medical and financial needs, you should contact a New York disability attorney for help in applying for Social Security disability benefits.
