February 10, 2011 - Important changes in the way the Social Security Administration (SSA) processes disability benefits applications are set to go into effect in September.
Government Health IT released information in a series of press releases related to the announcement of 15 new contracts totaling $17.4 million. The contracts were awarded on February 1 to an expansive list of health information networks, health providers, and health IT firms.
The contracts bring together several more organizations that are responsible for the networking of patient records, health information, and other vital pieces of information necessary in the Social Security disability benefits approval process. Currently, the SSA is partnered with MedVirginia, a health information exchange, and the new partnerships will expand their network to more than 32 facilities in 11 states.
The SSA and MedVirginia became the first federal-private partnership in the field and developed the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN) to help facilitate the exchange of patient health data. This has helped set the gears in motion for decreases in the approval time for disability applications and lessen the backlog of claims.
The new systems are focused on expediting record exchanges through the Internet using more standardized transmission methods. This means less paper, fewer delays in gathering documents, and quicker approval times. In some cases, claim decisions are made in days instead of months.
Faster benefit decisions means less frustration to claimants who depend on their Social Security disability benefits for basic daily needs. With the help of a New York disability lawyer claimants can take advantage of the experience of a trusted lawyer and the new electronic records network to obtain a much faster decision on a benefits application or appeal.
