New NY Legislation Passed For Disabled Rights

Posted on Aug 24, 2010

August 23, 2010 - New York -Two New York lawmakers are celebrating their work on getting the latest legislation benefitting disabled New Yorkers signed into law.

Sponsored by Senator Craig M. Johnson, S.7329 passed the Senate June 10 after passing the Assembly under the sponsorship of Assemblyman Michael J. Cusick. The legislation codifies the rights of disabled individuals to obtain education, public accommodations, housing, and commercial space without discrimination related to their disability. Because disability is covered under civil rights laws, it is illegal to discriminate against a person based upon disability.

The new protections afforded by S.7329 make it illegal to blacklist, boycott, refuse to buy from, sell to, or trade with an individual with a disability. There are additional protections regarding housing that have also been extended, including requiring landlords to make reasonable accommodations to common areas for suitable disabled access.

These housing modifications will be overseen by the State Division of Human Rights and may include adding Braille signage for visually impaired tenants or ramps for wheelchair-bound users.
