New Jersey Car Accident Injures Campbell CEO

Posted on Jul 24, 2009

Chief Executive Officer of Campbell Soup Co., Douglas Conant, was injured in a New Jersey car accident and is recovering from surgery.

At the time of the car crash, Conant was a passenger in the back of a company car operated by his driver when the vehicle collided with another on the New Jersey Turnpike, said Anthony Sanzio, a Campbell spokesman.

The CEO fractured ribs and sustained other injuries in the accident, according to Sanzio.  The driver of the company car also suffered injuries, which included cuts and bruises.

Sanzio said that he was unaware if any citations that may have been issued to either driver.

Conant was hospitalized for a short period of time, but is still in control of Campbell.  A statement was released by the company that the CEO would be missing a meeting with investors in North Carolina.

“The injuries will not affect his ability to make decisions.  He’s continuing to lead the company while he recuperates,” said Sanzio.

Before the announcement, Campbell shares fell 27 cents to close at $29.43.  The company’s stock has dropped 1.9 percent this year.
