New Data Sharing Program for SSA Helping Speed Up Claims

Posted on Jan 11, 2011

January 10, 2011 - The compiling and exchange of healthcare records is getting a much needed reformatting thanks to a Florida-based health IT vendor.

A report from Government Health IT announced that the Social Security Administration has recently approved the use of the C32 Continuity of Care Document (CCD), which is a standard format for sharing patient health records. This format uses a nationwide health information network to exchange the patient data between medical officials and the SSA, allowing disability claims to be handled faster.

This unified format will be extremely helpful in first application claims as it will allow all of a claimant's records to be collected and submitted at once, rather than having to track down old records across multiple caretakers. It will also serve useful for when a claimant who is already receiving benefits needs to change physicians.

The SSA has been steadily trying to increase the productivity of their systems as a way of reducing the claim backlog that often leaves claimants waiting months, even years, for their rightful benefits. While these cases do eventually result in a back-pay settlement when benefits are finally awarded, the time spent waiting for a benefits award can be costly and frustrating to many disabled individuals.

To give your Social Security disability claim the best chance at a smooth approval process, contact a New York disability lawyer. Your lawyer can help you gather all the necessary medical evidence to prove your disability and make sure your application is filed in a timely manner with constant attention to follow-up procedures.
