MitraClip May Be an Alternative for New Yorkers Who Need Open Heart Surgery

Posted on Apr 11, 2011

April 8, 2011 - According to a report from the Doctor's Lounge, MitraClip may be an alternative to open heart surgery. It is also a less invasive procedure that has been found to lead to shorter recovery times and hospital stays.

Patients who have mitral regurgitation, a condition in which a heart valve leaks, often undergo open heart surgery; however, new research supports evidence that a procedure using MitraClip, a device that works similar to a clothespin, can provide the same type of symptomatic relief.

The MitraClip device is inserted like a catheter. It runs through a major artery and into the heart where the leak is clamped. While the MitraClip procedure takes roughly 2 hours, the same amount of time as open heart surgery, most patients stay in the hospital just 1 or 2 days. This is in comparison to patients who undergo open heart surgery and stay from 5 to 7 days.

Additionally, patients who undergo the MitraClip procedure are able to return to normal activities almost immediately.

All of this may good news for patients who sometimes forego risky surgery, as the procedure can help relieve symptoms including:

  • swelling of the feet and legs;
  • breathing problems;
  • dizziness;
  • palpitations; and
  • fatigue.

Approximately 25,000 patients are diagnosed with mitral regurgitation every year in the United States but most try medication to relieve their symptoms.

Even though mitral regurgitation is most common among those aged 55 and older, if you are still in the workforce and the condition causes you to be unable to work, you may be eligible for Social Security disability benefits. To find out more about your options, you should consult with a New York Social Security disability lawyer.
