Mid-January Snow Storms Leave Disabled Stranded

January 12, 2011 - New York City, NY - Beyond the usual issues of snowplow access and waste management after the New York City snowstorms, new complaints about other city services have begun to surface, increasing attention on disability issues.

The Examiner.com reports the January blizzard that brought many New England states to their knees specifically hindered a certain population - the disabled. In New York City, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority suspended all paratransit service, including the popular Access-A-Ride program due to the storms.

Access-A-Ride is used by hundreds of New Yorkers who cannot use normal public transportation such as busses and subways. The system mimics the bus route system and helps disabled New Yorkers get to work, school, and other daily needs. Regular users were notified by a recorded call that the service was suspended on January 11^th due to the storms, which was a shock to some who said they had used the service in similar weather situations in the past.

The MTA says it had to suspend services to ensure the safety of its drivers and passengers and to avoid stranded vehicles. The AbleRide program of Long Island was also affected by the suspension. Only pre-arranged trips such as regular dialysis appointments or chemotherapy sessions were being serviced. While they are equipped to meet the needs of disabled transit, the smaller paratransit vans are not as well equipped to handle rough weather.
