LIE Closed by Spilled Milk from Truck Accident

An accident along the Long Island Expressway involving a jackknifed tractor-trailer leaves two people injured and thousands of gallons of milk spilled along the expressway. The incident took place at approximately 2:45 AM on Tuesday morning, December 8, 2009.

According to Nassau County police, the accident occurred when a tractor-trailer suffered a blowout causing the vehicle to slam into a car that was parked on the right shoulder of the road. The force of the impact caused the truck cab to burst into flames and thousands of gallons of milk to spill over the road.

Rescue crews transported the two occupants of the car to nearby Syosset Hospital where they were treated for injuries suffered in the accident. The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured in the two-vehicle wreck.

The tractor-trailer was transporting approximately 500 cases of 2-gallon jugs of milk, according to Syosset Fire Department first assistant chief Robert Kaplan. The spilled milk and debris caused officials to shutdown the eastbound lanes of the Long Island Expressway as well as the westbound HOV lane between exits 42 and 44 for approximately five hours as crews cleaned the mess. The roads were finally opened around 8:30 AM that morning.

The Long Island truck accident is still under investigation by local authorities.
