July Designated National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month

Posted on Jul 14, 2010

July 2010 - While mental illness doesn't discriminate, many minorities find themselves facing barriers when it comes to the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness.

Cultural differences and lack of information about mental health creates a stigma that prevents many minorities suffering from mental health disorders from seeking treatment and the disability benefits that could be helping to improve their lives. Allsup, a leading provider of Social Security disability insurance and Medicare plan services, is leading the initiative by providing free literature for individuals and organizations to distribute to help raise awareness.

The designation of July as the National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month was done to create an opportunity to educate the public about serious mental illness issues in diverse communities. The hope is that the more individuals reached by the programs, the more advances the medical community will seek to better support minority patients.

The outreach programs focus on some predominant barriers in many minority communities, including language, lack of health insurance, and a lack of personal knowledge of mental health conditions. Many cultures do not believe in the diagnosis of mental health conditions, and therefore may divert affected individuals from seeking help.
