July 26th Marks 20th Anniversary of Americans with Disabilities Act

Posted on Aug 04, 2010

July 26, 2010 - It was on this day in 1990 that President George H.W. Bush signed into law the Americans with Disabilities Act. This year marks the 20th anniversary of one of the most important pieces of legislation to support disabled Americans in their fight for fair treatment and recognition.

Since the act went into effect, the ADA has resulted in improvements in building accessibility, transportation methods, and a reduction on employment discrimination. While some opponents at first cited the bill as being too costly and would result in an increase in litigation, many disabled Americans owe a great deal to the success of the ADA.

Unfortunately, even with all of the positive impact the ADA has had on the lives of millions of disabled Americans, it is still the focus of much debate. The interpretation of the laws is criticized as being vague and many times misinterpreted by parties eager to file lawsuits. This leads many non-disabled persons to have a negative look on the laws, often ridiculing some of the more minor changes necessary to comply with ADA regulations.

Even with continued improvements to ADA regulations and programs designed to assist businesses with compliance issues, there are still many factors that could stand to use some improvement. Compliance with ADA standards is often costly for some shop owners who then risk additional costs and citations if they do not correctly modify their business to these standards.

Some companies are taking the opposite approach and instead focusing their efforts on assisting the nearly 54 million disabled Americans. For example, The Vehicle Production Group based in Florida has recently announced a new entirely wheelchair-accessible minivan. The base price of $40,000 will allow wheelchair-bound drivers a vehicle with a 1,200-pound capacity access ramp, 36-inch entryway, and room for up to 6 passengers similar to a standard minivan.
