Iowa Senator Reveals Sad Trend in Employment of Disabled Americans

Posted on Apr 24, 2011

April 22, 2011 - A keynote address to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Corporate Disability Employment Summit on April 12 has raised some alarming news about unemployment and the disabled.

TMCNews
reports that the keynote speech, given by Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) revealed that the number of unemployed disabled Americans is on the rise, as well as the number of disabled individuals leaving the workforce.

Sen. Harkin is the chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee and has been a long-standing advocate for people with disabilities. According to Sen. Harkin, nearly two-thirds of Americans with disabilities are unemployed. This number is expected to continue to increase, as he also reported that adults with disabilities are leaving the workforce at a rate 10 times higher than adults without disabilities.

To help halt this disturbing trend and encourage the reentry of disabled Americans into gainful employment, Sen. Harkin sent out a call to action for business owners to increase the number of disabled workers they employ from the 4.9 million today to 6 million by 2015.

The urgency was backed by statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics, which reported a nearly 400,000 person drop in the number of disabled employees in the workforce from March 2009 to March 2011. This drop in employment has gone hand in hand with the increase in claims for disability benefits, adding to the backlog experienced in many areas.

As more Americans develop disabling conditions over time due to age, genetics, and accidents the number of disability claims is expected to rise. To qualify for disability benefits it is often necessary to seek guidance from an experienced New York disability attorney for help in avoiding lengthy appeals.
