Health Update for Brooklyn Residents: MRI Scans May Indicate Alzheimer’s Risk

Posted on Apr 14, 2011

April 14, 2011 - In a report from Health Day, a new study indicates that MRI brain scans may indicate the risk of Alzheimer's. These brain scans were performed on adults in the early stages of memory problems, known as mild cognitive impairment (MCI).

According to the study, the brain scans may be able to determine which adults are likely to develop Alzheimer's, although experts say that most individuals with MCI have an increased chance of Alzheimer's. While MCI does not always progress to Alzheimer's, it is more serious than other age-related cognitive conditions.

While MRI brain scans can be helpful for early detection, there is still no cure for Alzheimer's. There is treatment available that can help some who are in the early to mid-level stages of Alzheimer's.

Alzheimer's affects approximately 5 million people in the United States. It can be a debilitating condition that results in problems with judgment, language skills and memory.

If you suffer from Alzheimer's or any other severe medical impairment, you may be entitled to receive Social Security disability benefits. A Brooklyn disability lawyer can help determine if you qualify and can assist you throughout the entire application process for Social Security disability benefits.
