December 22, 2010 - New York - Many New Yorkers who recently filed a Social Security disability claim may receive notice that their personal information was recently compromised.
The Poughkeepsie Journal reports that private contractors working with a state agency handling Social Security disability claims had its data system compromised in mid-December. The personal information of more than 15,000 New York claimants may be jeopardized, but the Social Security Commissioner and the New York state police are working on the case.
The individual connected to the illegal download is in police custody as Commissioner Michael J. Astrue and investigators work to determine what information was obtained and the risk it poses to those affected. So far, only a limited number of cases have shown up where the information was used, but the extent of the violation has yet to be determined.
Authorities have announced that anyone whose information was compromised and is found to have been used illegally will be contacted and offered assistance.
Filing an application for Social Security disability benefits can be difficult and involve many types of documentation and paperwork that often contains sensitive material. For trustworthy assistance in filing your claim, contact an experienced New York disability lawyer.
