Greater Damage May Result after Heart Attack When Patient Given Anemia Drug

Posted on May 26, 2011

Social Security disability benefits may be available if you have been diagnosed with a severe cardiovascular problem that has caused you to become disabled.

According to a report from the Doctor's Lounge, greater damage may result after a heart attack when a patient is given a particular anemia drug.

The anemia drug, erythropoietin alfa, is used for some heart attack patients because some studies have shown that it could improve heart function. Some of the more well known names used are Epogen and Procrit. However, a new study finds otherwise.

This new study indicates that caution should be used before deciding to give this anemia drug to a heart attack patient. It has been found to not only increase damage from a heart attack but even create new heart problems.

Some of the potential problems include the risk of another heart attack and blockage in the stent placed in the patient during angioplasty.

Anemia drugs have also been linked to increased risk of heart failure, tumor growth and stroke in cancer patients. This should prompt doctors to carefully evaluate the risks and benefits of using anemia drugs.

If you have questions concerning your eligibility for disability benefits or if you need help in appealing a denied claim, you should seek the help of a Brooklyn Social Security disability attorney.
