Just four days before Christmas, a 24-year-old man was killed in a drunk driving accident in Gloucester County. The driver, Arthur Anwar, a 53-year-old Glassboro man, has admitted that he was driving drunk at the time of the two-car accident.
Anwar’s passenger, Arthur Davis, was killed in the crash. On Monday, May 11, 2009, Anwar pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide in the death of his friend, Davis. He admitted his blood-alcohol level at the time of the fatal accident was .205, which is more than twice the legal limit in New Jersey.
According to police, Anwar and Davis had spent the evening at Down on Main Street bar in Glassboro. Anwar was driving his 1997 Mazda 626 on Glassboro Road in Monroe Township at approximately 2:00 AM when the vehicle crashed into the back of a dump truck. Davis had to be extricated from the wreck and later died at Cooper Hospital in Camden from his multiple injuries. Anwar suffered only minor injuries.
Anwar’s second degree murder charge comes with a maximum 10-year jail sentence. Since it was an open plea, the prosecutor’s office will not recommend a sentence, as it will be left to the judge’s discretion. His sentencing is scheduled for June 19th, which happens to be one day before what would have been Davis’ 25th birthday.
