October 21, 2010 - Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is one of the many diseases classified as disabling by the Social Security Administration. Because those who suffer from MS often experience impaired mobility, difficulty with speech, cognitive problems, and fatigue, they are often unable to perform substantial gainful activity.
Treatments for MS have been a focus of many medical research studies and clinical trials by drug manufacturers. Recent announcements from the Genzyme company report that an ongoing clinical trial of its drug Campath (Alemtuzumab) is still going strong with positive results.
A mid-stage trial report released at the European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis on October 14, 2010 stated that 87% of Campath-treated patients experienced no increase in symptoms or disability after 5 years. In comparison, a rival drug, Rebif, only saw a 62% stalling of symptom increase.
The late-stage trial results for Campath should be made available by mid-2011 with Genzyme filing for FDA approval of the drug in early 2012. An approval should come around the middle of the year.
MS is just one of the many disabling conditions that may qualify you for Social Security disability benefits. If you are seeking to file a claim for benefits, you should speak with an experienced Staten Island Social Security Social Security disability lawyer.
