Five People Killed in N.J. Turnpike Accident

A crash on the New Jersey Turnpike involving a tractor trailer and 10 cars has resulted in five deaths and three injuries, according to New Jersey State Police.

A Freightliner tractor trailer is believed to have started the multi-vehicle accident and investigators have taken a blood sample from the trucker, said Sgt. Julian Castellanos.

The accident occurred at 1:00 PM approximately a half-mile north of Exit 4, for Route 73.  The cause of the fatal New Jersey car accident is still under investigation by state police, but according to Castellanos, the tractor trailer was traveling southbound when it hit the rear of a 2004 Buick LeSabre that was stopped in traffic.

The Buick was in the right lane, but the impact of the rear-end collision caused it to propel into the center lane, hitting other cars and then bursting into flames.

All five passengers in the Buick were killed, including Jeanette Urbano, 72, Salvatore Urbano, 74, both from Passaic, New Jersey, Anna Kane, 76, Rose Kane, 75, and Francis Kane, 78, all from Kearney, New Jersey.

Three people who had been riding in a 1999 Jeep Cherokee were injured in the crash.  One of the passengers, Alfonzo Simmons, a 56-year-old New York resident, was flown to Cooper Medical Center, where he is listed in critical condition.

The truck driver, Dewey Tyrone Thomas, a 40-year-old Columbus, Georgia resident, has yet to be cited, but investigators have 30 days to file charges against him.
