A federal committee of cancer experts voted unanimously that the approval for Avastin to be used in the treatment of breast cancer should be revoked.
The New York Times reports that the vote came in late June, during a review of the FDA's approval of the cancer drug Avastin. The 2-day hearing involved testimony from several women who claimed the drug had drastically improved their survival with the disease.
The researchers involved cited clinical trials which showed Avastin was neither safe nor effective in treating breast cancer. These trials showed potentially serious side effects such as high blood pressure, hemorrhaging, and gastrointestinal perforations.
Avastin was approved in 2008, for treatment of metastatic breast cancer, under an accelerated approval process which allows drugs to reach the market quicker, allowing less time for complete testing and study.
Avastin is still approved for use in treating many other types of cancers and may still be used off-label to treat breast cancer; however, the cost of the drug (as much as $88,000 per year) still bars many patients from using this treatment option.
