Diabetes & Premature Death: What New York Disability Applicants Should Know

Posted on Mar 11, 2011

March 11, 2011 - A report from the Doctor's Lounge indicates that in a new study, diabetes may increase the chance of premature death by as much as 80%.

Additionally, this study found that individuals with diabetes were at an increased risk of premature death because of other risk factors such as infectious diseases, mental disorders, liver disease, cancer and even suicide.

The study may just shed light on the seriousness of diabetes. While many believe it is a treatable disease that requires nothing more than taking some medication, there are other serious risk factors that need to be considered.

In addition to diabetics having an 80% higher chance of premature death, they were also found to be 25% more likely to die as a result of cancer.

The cancers most prevalent in diabetics include:

  • colorectal;
  • breast;
  • bladder;
  • liver;
  • pancreatic;
  • ovarian;
  • bladder; and
  • lung.

The study also revealed a link between diabetes, mental disorders and premature death. Diabetics were found to be 64% more likely to die because of mental disorders, with a 58% higher chance of suicide as a result.

Issues such as abnormal blood glucose fasting levels and blood sugar levels were also closely associated with premature death.

If you have been diagnosed with a severe condition that has led to a disability, consulting with a New York Social Security disability lawyer should be your next step to determine if you qualify for disability benefits.
