Sept. 10, 2010 - Researchers in Australia have found that 42% of women who underwent surgery to treat breast cancer soon developed a loss of Upper Body Function (UBF).
In an abstract published by Health and Quality of Life Outcomes, the research shows the level of impairment of UBF among 287 women aged 74 years and younger who had undergone treatment for breast cancer.
The majority of the women studied, 74%, were treated through local tumor removal while 87% also underwent lymph node dissection as a form of surgical treatment. Post surgery, 70% of the participants had undergone radiation treatment, while 40% received chemotherapy and 60% received hormone therapy.
Assessments of UBF were done for strength and endurance. Testing methods focused on hand grip, strength, and flexibility and were conducted using an incremental exercise protocol with handheld weights.
The decline of UBF in the women was noticeable around the 6-month mark following their breast cancer surgery. Declines continued up until the 18 month study period concluded, with 42% of the women showing declines in UBF.
Loss of UBF following breast cancer treatment can have a serious impact on a patient's quality of life. Loss of arm functionality and the ability to perform daily tasks can not only affect a person's physical health, but also their mental health. In severe cases of impaired UBF, a patient may need to claim disability if they are unable to continue working.
