Clot-Busting Drugs Could Decrease New Yorkers’ Stroke-Related Disabilities

February 17, 2011 - Many New Yorkers develop disabling conditions after suffering a mild stroke, but new research shows that there may be benefits to clot-busting medications that can prevent New Yorkers' stroke-related disabilities.

An article from Internal Medicine News recapped a press briefing from the recent International Stroke Conference where Dr. Pooja Khatri discussed her research of the administration of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) in minor stroke patients.

The drug has been used cautiously in the past, as it presented benefits along with the risk of further bleeding. In Dr. Khatri's studies, data from 441 patients who suffered ischemic stroke in 2005 was recorded and analyzed. Of these patients, 56% suffered a mild stroke and of those patients, 62% were considered eligible for treatment with tPA drugs. Of those 150 patients, only 4 received the drug.

Based on additional studies, Dr. Khatri determined that nearly 30% of mild stroke patients experience some form of disability following their injury. Her estimates found that of the expected 27,203 patients with mild strokes in 2010, if they had received tPA treatment up to 13% could be saved from stroke-related disability.

Currently, only a small portion of mild stroke patients receive tPA therapy because of the minor benefits in light of the risk of brain hemorrhage. It is Dr. Khatri's hope that further studies can be conducted on the benefits and a milder form of the medications can be produced.
