Cancer Treatment Drug Can Help Cut Breast Cancer Risk

Breast cancer is often accompanied by severe complications that can become disabling. This may lead an individual to seek Social Security disability benefits.

Health News reports that a cancer treatment drug can help cut breast cancer risk by more than half. The side effects are also less threatening than other types of cancer treatment.

Hormone-blocking pills, known as aromatase inhibitors, come under the brand names of Aromasin, Femara and Arimidex. They are also available in generic brands.

Currently these drugs are used to help prevent breast cancer recurrence in post-menopausal women. However, this provides yet another safer option for women. The 2 drugs that are most commonly used today are raloxifene and tamoxifen. Both have serious risks such as blood clots and uterine cancer.

Aromasin was tested in a study of female participants with various breast cancer risk factors. Some were given daily doses of the drug, and others were given a placebo. After about 3 years with those who had taken Aromasin, just 11 cases of invasive breast cancer were reported. But there were 32 cases with the group of women who had taken a placebo.

The results were a 65% decreased risk of breast cancer for those who were treated with Aromasin.
