The Doctor's Lounge reports that a new study shows genetic testing guidelines for breast and ovarian cancer are not being followed by many doctors. Cancer could lead an individual to seek Social Security disability benefits if they are no longer able to work.
Evidence has shown the benefits in genetic testing for those patients who have a family history of breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Yet despite this, there is a significant amount of doctors who are failing to utilize these tests. This means that women who are at high risk for these types of cancers could be missing out on treatment that helps to reduce their risk.
The results of the study showed that just 41% of doctors would refer their patients for genetic testing and, despite this testing, only being advised for those who are at high risk which concludes that 29% of doctors indicated they would refer women with an average risk.
This demonstrates a need for more doctors to refer high risk patients for genetic testing. They also need to avoid putting women with an average risk through genetic testing, since treatment may cause greater harm than good.
