Bloomberg Urged to Select Wheelchair-Friendly New York City Taxi Design

February 17, 2011 - New York City, NY - One of New York City's iconic modes of transportation - the taxi cab - is set to undergo a change in the coming years with the Taxi of Tomorrow project.

In a press release on IowaPolitics.com the letter from Iowa Senator Tom Harkin was published, showing his support for the Taxi of Tomorrow project. In his letter to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Harkin commends the mayor's support of wheelchair-friendly New York City taxis and urges him to continue that support by selecting a vehicle model that includes a ramp for wheelchair access for its fleet of 13,000 taxis.

The Taxi of Tomorrow project began in 2007 when a group of stakeholders met to create a set of goals for the initiative. In December 2009, a call for design submissions went out to auto manufacturers and designers. After years of development and planning, the choices have narrowed to 3 models.

Of the 3 models, only the Karsan V1 is fully ADA compliant, although the Ford Transit Connect and Nissan NV200 both have rear entry wheelchair access. If one of these models is selected, New York City will be the first city in the world with a fully accessible fleet. It is Sen. Harkin's hope that this will set an example for other cities where taxis are heavily in use and promote more ADA compliant vehicles.

Currently, the Taxi of Tomorrow project is gathering public opinion on the 3 models to determine the needs and wants of the New York City population. All New Yorkers, both disabled and non-disabled, are encouraged to participate in voicing their opinion on the new fleet design, which could be the standard for New York City taxi cabs-and cabs nationwide-for the next 10 years.
