90-Year-Old Man Mauled By Dogs in Staten Island

Posted on Jun 10, 2009

In July 2008, a 90-year-old man was attacked by two pit bulls in Staten Island’s Port Richmond neighborhood.  The accident occurred in the morning.

Henry Piotrowski, the New York dog bite victim, was transported to Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton and was listed in critical condition following the vicious attack.  His left leg had to be amputated at the knee and it was believed that he would probably lose one of his arms as well.

The 28-year-old dog owner, James McNair, was arrested in connection with the mauling, said police.  The pit bulls were put down.

According to police, McNair, who is a registered sex offender, was charged with having unlicensed dogs, not having his dogs on a leash and possessing fireworks.

A neighbor discovered the pit bulls on top of Piotrowski in the man’s backyard.  He had heard the victim screaming for help.  The neighbor ran inside his home and called 9-1-1, then chased the dogs away with a butcher’s knife.

Police found the canines inside a home on Newark Avenue, which was near the location of the gruesome dog attack.  An 11-year-old boy told reporters that the family found the dogs bloodied and thought they had gotten into a fight with another animal.
