September 29, 2010 - New York - A recently awarded federal grant will soon help the New York State Department of Labor provide new employment opportunities to disabled New Yorkers.
Reports from the Greater Binghamton Business Journal cite the $5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor as a great boost to education, training and access to employment for unemployed and disabled residents. New York is one of 9 states awarded a grant from the $21 million allocated to the Labor Department's Disability Employment Initiative.
Heading up the distribution and use of the grant are the Social Security Administration's Work Incentive Planning and Assistance Program and the Community Work Incentive Coordinators. These organizations will work with adults and youth who are currently unemployed or receiving Social Security disability benefits.
The goal is to create new employment opportunities for these individuals by providing adequate training and supportive systems for their disabilities. This grant is similar to the Ticket to Work program the Social Security Administration has to assist those on Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income. The goal is to reestablish financial independence and security by locating appropriate gainful activity for the unemployed and disabled residents.
