If you have been diagnosed with terminal cancer and are no longer able to function or work, then you may be eligible to receive Social Security disability benefits.
The New York Times reports that the lives of patients with advanced melanoma may be prolonged with the use of 2 new drugs. One of the drugs helps to attack the gene associated with tumor growth, and the other helps the immune system attack the cancer.
Experts caution that in most cases these drugs will not cure melanoma; however, they may provide several additional months of life. This is hopeful news because the average lifespan for those with advanced melanoma is 6 to 10 months.
After conducting trials on these 2 new drugs, it was found that some patients could live an additional 2 years. One drug, vemurafenib, was found to be so successful during the trial that researchers actually stopped the study so that those who had been taking a placebo were able to benefit from the effects of the drug.
The other drug, ipilimumab, had a median survival rate of an additional 11.2 months. With the positive results of both drugs, researchers plan to test what the effects could be if these drugs were taken at the same time.
