The Dangers of Second-Hand Cribs: A Look at What You Need to Know Before Putting Your Baby in a Hand-Me-Down Crib

There are quite a few dangers associated with buying or being given a second-hand crib. Of course there is always a concern about if it is clean and things of that nature but the most important danger of a second-hand crib is the sturdiness of the crib and the safety of the crib.

Second-hand cribs are often older and there may have been a recall issued on them that the person who sold or gave it to you was unaware of. Recalled cribs may vary in severity as far as how severe of an issue the defective and unsafe product may cause and also may vary as far as what the fix for the issue is. Some cribs may be able to be fixed with a safety repair kit which is usually provided by the manufacturer while other issues may be unable to be repaired and may be required to stop use all together. Another major issue that can cause second-hand cribs to be unsafe is if parts are missing. Missing parts especially parts that hold a drop side in place can cause the crib to function improperly and cause an injury or death to a child.

When purchasing or receiving a second-hand crib from someone it is important that you follow a few important steps to make sure the crib is safe for your baby:
  • Always do research to check to see if the crib has ever been recalled
  • Make sure there are no parts that are missing from the crib - even the smallest part could make a big difference when it comes to holding the crib together
  • Do periodic checks to make sure the crib is still functioning properly
