CPSC to Issue Warning About Dangerous Baby Slings

According to Inez Tenenbaum, the head of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), her agency is gearing up to issue a warning to parents and caregivers of the dangers associated with baby slings. This alert has the Staten Island injury lawyers at our law office worried about the wellbeing of our children in New York.

There has already been concern that baby slings pose a fall hazard to infants and Consumer Reports even raised their apprehension back in 2008, linking soft fabric slings to two dozen serious injuries. However, the warning that will be issued by the CPSC has to do with something entirely different – a suffocation hazard.

It is believed that some infants have already suffered from suffocation caused by baby slings. According to Tenenbaum, “we know of too many deaths in these slings and we now know the hazard scenarios for very small babies. So, the time has come to alert parents and caregivers.”

During a speech at the meeting of the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association, an industry trade group that certifies certain children’s products, Tenenbaum talked about baby slings, but did not single out a particular brand or mention the number of deaths caused by this type of children’s product.

Safety advocates are worried about the “C-like” position that is created when a baby lies in the sling. The baby could flop his or her head forward, chin-to-chest, making it difficult to breath. The other potential danger is that the baby can turn towards the mother and suffocate in her clothing.

Baby slings can be extremely dangerous. If you are a parent or caregiver, you need to consider all of these possible hazards, before putting your child in one of these devices.
