Social Security’s Listing of Impairments: Skin Disorders

Most people would not consider skin disorders as a common medical condition that would cause an individual to be considered disabled. The Social Security Administration (SSA) does identify several skin disorders as qualifying for disability on their listing of impairments. If you are considering filing for Social Security disability benefits you should contact a New York disability lawyer to discuss your conditions and benefit eligibility.

Skin Disorders Considered for Social Security Disability Benefits

There are many types of skin disorders that the SAA considers in their listing of impairments. The listings are not exhaustive and you may have a condition that also qualifies but is not addressed in the lists. A New York disability lawyer can help you determine if your skin disorders are automatically considered disabling, or if you will need additional proof of disability for your Social Security disability benefits claim.

The following skin disorders are some of those listed as approved for disability on the listing of impairments:

  • tuberous sclerosis;
  • malignant skin tumors;
  • autoimmune disorders;
  • xeroderma pigmentosum;
  • disfigurement that causes disability in other body systems;
  • ichthyosis;
  • bullous disease;
  • chronic skin or mucous membrane infections;
  • dermatitis;
  • hidradenitis suppurativa; and
  • genetic photosensitivity disorders.

Some burn conditions may also qualify for Social Security disability benefits if the skin lesions and treatment are expected to last for at least 12 months.

Assessing Skin Disorders for Social Security Disability Benefits

For any sort of medical disorder to be considered by the SSA as a disabling condition it must impact your ability to perform substantial gainful activity. This means your skin disorders must be such that they prevent you from being able to work at your previous occupation or a comparable type of employment for which you are qualified. Assessing your working ability is an important element of your claim that a New York disability lawyer can assist you with.

To apply for Social Security disability benefits you will need to prove that you have had skin disorders for at least 12 months or will continue to have them for more than 12 months from diagnosis. Disorders that affect the joints, limit the use of extremities, cause lesions on your hands that prevent fine and gross motor movements, or restrict your ability to work in certain elements (light, heat, cold, etc.) are all considered in the listing of impairments.

Medical Proof of Skin Disorders

The most important evidence you must provide when applying for Social Security disability benefits is medical documentation and proof that you have had or will have had a disabling condition for at least 12 months.
This means you should have an ongoing record of diagnosis, testing and treatment/management to control your disability.

Because skin disorders may come and go and flare up or go dormant at times, they are slightly more difficult to keep record of. You should be on a regular medical review schedule with a doctor, as well as continue to seek treatment or management for your condition. You improve your chances at obtaining and keeping your benefits when you provide consistent medical documentation of your skin disorders.
